Fault Finding
Fault finding in underground utility locating is essential for identifying issues within buried infrastructure. This process involves using specialized equipment to detect high decibel readings that will point to breaks in the coating, faulty connections, or strike damage. By accurately pinpointing these faults, Linelock Locating can prevent costly full replacement and extended service interruptions. Fault finding allows for timely repairs, minimizing disruption to both residential and commercial projects.
Private Utilities
In the United States, approximately 65% of underground utilities are privately owned, while the remaining 35% are public. This significant percentage underscores the importance of understanding what lies beneath the surface before beginning any excavation work. In Illinois, the law mandates that you call 811 to locate and mark public utilities prior to digging; however, it's crucial to note that 811 contractors do not provide the location and marking of private utilities.
Neglecting to identify private utilities can lead to severe consequences. Damage to these lines can result in costly repairs and project delays, as well as potential safety hazards for workers on-site. Striking a private utility not only disrupts the project timeline but can also pose risks to public safety, leading to accidents that could have been easily avoided.
To prevent major setbacks and ensure a smooth workflow, it is essential to utilize a specialized utility locating service that can accurately identify and mark private utilities. By taking proactive steps to understand the underground landscape, you can safeguard your project against avoidable incidents, protect your investment, and maintain a safe working environment.
Damage costs
Repairs to underground utilities can be significantly costly, with expenses varying widely based on the type and extent of the damage. For instance, a water line repair can range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand, depending on factors such as the location of the break, accessibility, and the complexity of the repair work required.
When it comes to sewer line damage, the costs can escalate quickly. A sewer line hit typically incurs charges of $100 to $200 per foot, in addition to excavation costs, which can add substantial amounts to the overall bill. The complexity of the job, including the need for specialized equipment or additional labor, can further increase these expenses.
On average, the total cost of repairing an underground utility hit is around $3,500. However, this figure can fluctuate widely—while some repairs may only require a few hundred dollars if the damage is minimal, others could lead to thousands in expenses, especially if extensive work is needed.
These costs not only strain budgets but also disrupt project timelines, highlighting the importance of thorough utility locating prior to any excavation work. By investing in proper utility locating services, you can mitigate the risk of costly repairs and ensure smoother project execution. Prioritizing private utility locating also protects worker safety, which is invaluable.

Our locating process uses both passive and active transmission methods to meet all your locating needs.
Active EM Locating is our preferred method for identifying underground utilities. This approach allows us to control both the ground and the frequency emitted by the transmitter, minimizing the risk of the signal bleeding off onto anther nearby utility.
Passive EM Locating is a great way to quickly scan an area for Live AC Power and radio signals. This can not only be helpful to locate live power in a dig zone but any other actively used utility that may have been missed or unaware it even existed.
Can't connect to a utility?
You don't always have the luxury of being able to physically connect your machine to the utility. Our advanced equipment can induce a strong electromagnetic field in the earth, energizing any conductive materials below.
